Samsung rumored to be building new NFC products, NFC payments?

Samsung is building its own NFC chips and is developing new products, NFC Rumors has learned. It seems like we head off for a few days and the NFC environment goes crazy. We came back to an inbox full of news and, of course, rumors from some of our best sources. We all know that Samsung is slinging NFC into most phones they release from here on out. It is a great win for NFC and a greater win for the consumer that one of the most powerful phone manufacturers is enabling its devices on mass for the consumer.

Tapit picks up Unilever and takes NFC billboards inside a University

Tapit adds Unilever and Lipton Ice Tea to the string of projects that the firm can tuck into its back pocket. One of the real success stories of NFC marketing is Australia's Tapit. They only launched this year, have won a Red Herring Award, and have closed an exclusive contract with JCDecaux. They have also teamed up with Clear Channel in Singapore, and now they add Unilever to that growing list of projects that they are involved in.

Tapit have proven themselves to be effective communicators, or what we like to call brand whores here at NFC Rumors. They unashamedly create news on a near daily basis and have upped their profile massively using good old marketing and PR tactics.

AT&T being forced to enable NFC in Samsung Galaxy S II with Ice Cream Sandwich update

AT&T didn't enable NFC in the Samsung Galaxy S II, and if you are an owner you will be painfully aware of that fact. NFC Rumors has exclusively learned that AT&T is being pressured to enable NFC in the Samsung Galaxy S II because of the press and excitement among consumers about Android Beam. AT&T didn't enable the NFC in the device for two reasons: one, they want to monetize NFC before they launch it, and secondly they didn't want consumers using more data with NFC actions.

Have you ever seen the NFC Forum Chairman give a demonstration to a few people? Well, now you can. We caught some footage of Koichi Tagawa demonstrating his phone connecting to a Sony NFC speaker. We went to Chicago this last week to 4G World. We got to see some of the most important industry stakeholders in NFC talk about everything that challenges and represents opportunity in near field communication. In case you don't know, when Mr. Tagawa isn't being the Chairman of the NFC Forum, he's a General Manager at Sony. The NFC speakers in the video are Sony NFC Felica based accessories and you will see them working with a Nexus S 4G.

Sprint focusing on NFC, developer conference next week

We caught up with some of the Sprint team at 4G World this week. They let us know some interesting information about how Sprint is viewing their company these days, which gave clues to what they have planned in the future. Sprint team members told NFC Rumors that Sprint no longer views itself as a telco. These days, the word around Sprint is that Sprint is a mobile ISP. This shows that Sprint is moving with the times. It shows that the Kansas company is aware that mobile data is all that matters these days and calls, email, NFC and all other services are an extension of the mobile ISP services that Spint supplies.

Hyundai developing NFC for cars? NFC Rumors Exclusive

NFC Rumors has learned that Hyundai are playing with NFC, but our sources couldn't tell us what for. Let's start off by saying this isn't a fully formed rumor and we will bring you more as we get it. What we do know is Korean executive business types are talking about Hyundai working with NFC in a big way.

However what we are lacking is knowing in what context. We don't think that Hyundai would be making NFC phones or tablets. Hyundai makes many products and so this rumor could represent anything. However, especially in the US, Hyundai are known for cars and it would make sense that the Korean company would work with a system like NXP's KeyLink Lite to use NFC for access control, and perhaps user preferences within their cars.

Samsung Nexus Prime / Samsung Galaxy Nexus video leaked

The NFC phone that was codenamed Samsung Nexus Prime and has recently been dubbed the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. We have heard a lot of specifications during leaks and we have heard a lot of rumors, but what we haven't had is a visual image of the Samsung Nexus Prime until now. A Romanian website called Gadget.ro has posted an image and video of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

A video featuring the Samsung Nexus Prime / Samsung Galaxy Nexus has leaked

To be frank, it is amazing that the Samsung Nexus Prime / Samsung Galaxy Nexus hasn't had images or photos leak up until this point. But days before the official launch when Samsung will unveil the Samsung Galaxy Nexus or Nexus Prime, a video has surfaced. Yesterday we learned of the NFC phone's specifications and we also learned that the Samsung Galaxy Nexus could launch as soon as October 27th. Specs include that mighty display and processor combo and a rumored 5-megapixel camera. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is slated to be a Verizon only affair at least to begin with. So, as per rumors, we can also expect an LTE capable device.

Unfortunately the video doesn't show the back or sides of the Samsung Nexus Prime. We only get to see the front and how it is rocking Ice Cream Sandwich. From the front, the Samsung Nexus Prime looks svelte and shows just how fluid the UI is and how the phone effortlessly runs through the Ice Cream Sandwich OS. What is sure is we are getting a pure Google Experience NFC phone hit the market by the end of this month. The anticipation for the Samsung Nexus Prime / Samsung Galaxy Nexus is nearly palpable and now we only have to wait until Tuesday to get all the details. This NFC phone still has a identity crisis in name, and whether it is called the Samsung Galaxy Nexus or Samsung Nexus Prime, we want to know if you plan on getting on Big Red and grabbing one.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus Could Launch Oct 27th

It has been called the Verizon Droid Prime, it has been called the Samsung Nexus Prime, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and the Samsung Prime and it is an NFC phone. Whatever it ends up being called, it is looking like - what we are going to call it - the Samsung Galaxy Nexus is all set to launch on October 27th if a memo that is floating around Verizon internally is to be believed. The guys over at DroidLife had their hands on an internal Verizon memo that showed upcoming release dates and the "Samsung Prime" had a date.

However, the email that Verizon employees received this morning does say that dates are subject to change. But consider that this could be subterfuge. In a best case scenario, we could see the Samsung Galaxy Nexus released as early as next week to compete with the iPhone 4S launch.

Here is the memo received this morning by VZW staff with the release schedule that includes the Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Samsung Galaxy Nexus event

We know that the Samsung event that is tipped to launch the Samsung Galaxy Nexus is due to happen this next Tuesday, and after so many rumors we end up with more questions than answers. We are hearing through our sources that the NFC is going to be turned on in the device because Verizon feels it has to with other mobile network carriers having competitive edges on other hero phones. However, even our sources were not absolutely certain that by the time the device launches that this would be the case. So, question one would be is NFC going to be turned on? Hot on the heels of that question surrounds what speed the processor clocks in at.

The rumors are suggesting that the Samsung Galaxy Nexus processor is clocked at 1.2GHz and yet as was pointed out to us today in a comment on the site that the TI OMAP 4460 dual-core Cortex A9 processor is, in fact, a 1.5GHz thinker. We didn't question it earlier because of the way in which this rumor was presented over at BGR, which stated that the Samsung Galaxy Nexus sported a "TI OMAP 4460 dual-core Cortex A9 processor clocked at 1.2GHz" and assumed perhaps that Samsung had opted to down clock the processor because of stability issues. What is interesting is that since the rumors of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus first appeared way back at the start of the summer, the processor clock speed has bounced between 1.2GHz and 1.5GHz. We have less than a week to find out which is correct.

What we want to know from you, NFC Rumors reader, is whether you plan to get a Samsung Galaxy Nexus running Ice Cream Sandwich based on the specifications we reported earlier, and would it make any difference to you if NFC was not turned on?

T-Mobile will have NFC turned on in Samsung Galaxy S II NFC Rumors Exclusive

We have received exclusive information from a reliable source that suggests that the T-Mobile variant of the Samsung Galaxy S II will have its NFC turned on. This is great news for consumers and NFC in general, that there will be yet another NFC super phone available in the US. There were some doubts as to whether T-Mobile would enable NFC in the Samsung Galaxy S II after the company disabled NFC in the BlackBerry line up and AT&T turned off NFC on its Samsung Galaxy S II variant. We already gave an exclusive a week or so ago that T-Mobile is planning on bringing at least five and up to eight new NFC smartphones to market this year. Now we know that the Samsung Galaxy S II will rock NFC as it was intended to. Although both AT&T and T-Mobile are part of Isis, it appears that T-Mobile is taking a very different approach to NFC than AT&T, which we must say that we are relieved to see. However, that could be short lived if AT&T gets its way and is able to acquire T-Mobile. We won't be keen on Isis while its model is based around control as it is, but credit where credit is due in regards to the Samsung Galaxy S II and NFC T-Mobile is doing the right thing for its customers.
